BBQ tips for beginners

The BBQ season is in full swing again. Are you organising a barbecue, but don't know how and where to start? Below we have listed some tips for a successful BBQ, both at home and at the campsite!

How do you start?

If you are going to barbecue, it is important to prepare a few things. The place where you put the barbecue is very important. The barbecue must not be too close to flammable items, but you also don't want to put it so far away that you have to go through the whole garden to get a nice chicken skewer. Therefore, choose a suitable place in advance, without too much wind, where you are going to put the BBQ and light it afterwards.

Are you inviting a large group over for dinner or will it just be your family? When you invite a large group for a BBQ in the garden, it is good to think about where everyone can sit/stand. A barbecue often creates a loose, relaxed atmosphere. Moreover, everyone often walks back and forth to see if the meat is done. It is therefore not very practical to give everyone a fixed seat, so keep it light. A barbecue with a side table is a very suitable solution. You can then stay with a snack and a drink near the braai master.

If you are only barbecuing with the family, then a smaller tabletop BBQ is a handy solution. You can put it on your table. You then do not have to walk back and forth all the time to check if the dish is ready.

Do you want to work as a real professional braai master? Then you can use our Smoker box to get that authentic smoky flavour from your meat. A Bluetooth thermometer to regularly check the core temperature is also a must.

Handy to know: All our BBQs are provided with a GreenGrill coating. This coating conducts heat better than a standard non-stick coating. We therefore recommend using only 75% of the power you are used to.

Which dishes do you make?

Once you have all the preparations under control, it is of course a good idea to think about which dishes you will prepare. Are you going for multiple, small snacks or do you want to make a big splash with, for example, pulled pork or spare ribs. Whatever you choose, make sure there is something for everyone. But don't overdo it, because throwing it away is a waste.

Good meat is often expensive. If you don't want to spend too much money, you can make some side dishes. Think for example of these stuffed avocados with olive bread or jalapeño corn fritters.

When the meat and the side dishes are finished, you can also prepare a delicious dessert on the barbecue. How about grilled peaches with monchou or chocolate bananas?

Our CADAC Camping Cookbook makes it super easy to choose and prepare delicious barbecue dishes.

Gas connection

Are you going to use a gas barbecue or do you have an electric barbecue? If you have a gas BBQ, it's good to check in advance whether there is enough gas in the gas cartridge or gas bottle. You can choose a disposable gas cartridge or a refillable gas bottle. For a barbecue in the garden with a lot of people, a refillable gas bottle is a very good option. If you take the barbecue with you to the campsite, then a disposable gas cartridge is probably a better alternative. You connect a gas bottle or a gas cartridge to your barbecue with a gas pressure regulator. This pressure regulator ensures that your barbecue always has a good, constant pressure. The pressure regulator you need depends on the type of gas supply you choose. You can read more about this in our blog 'Choosing the right gas connection'.

Cleaning

No matter how you look at it, the barbecue will have to be cleaned afterwards. We understand that this is not something you are looking forward to, so we hope to make it a little easier with our tips & tricks.

In order to enjoy your barbecue for a long time, it is useful to clean it properly after use. Sometimes it is just a question of soaking it in soapy water with washing-up liquid. More stubborn dirt can be removed with, for example, CADAC Barbecue Cleaner. After cleaning, you can cover the BBQ with a suitable protective cover to prevent it from getting dusty and dirty.
