Cook healthier with GreenGrill

South Africa is known for its Big Five. Did you know that we have our own CADAC Big Five? One of the features in our Big Five is the GreenGrill coating. If you want to know what is so special about this, read this blog.

Sustainability and a healthy lifestyle is becoming more important. We are trying to do our bit by means of a GreenGrill coating on most of our cooking surfaces.

What is a GreenGrill?

The GreenGrill is a ceramic coating that is harder wearing than regular non-stick coatings. This makes it more resistant against high temperatures. The heat is distributed more evenly and retained, so less gas is used during baking and grilling. This ceramic coating is made in such a way that nothing sticks to your BBQ grill, which makes cleaning afterwards easier as well.

Most non-stick coatings contain PFTE, also known as Teflon. When this coating gets too hot, it releases toxic substances such as PFOA. Our GreenGrill is made of organic materials and is therefore PFTE- and PFOA-free. No toxic substances are released during baking and grilling, which is of course better for your health.

Preparation and use

Before you start, it is important to first heat up the GreenGrill, this is called seasoning. Seasoning provides the pan or cooking grid with a thin protective layer, which makes the food less sticky during cooking. How to do this is explained below:

  • Rub some sunflower or peanut oil into the cooking surface. These oils have a higher burning point and are therefore more suitable for cooking with than olive oil, for example.
  • Place the cooking surface on medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Allow to cool down and wash with some detergent.

Cleaning

After you've barbecued to the max, everything has to be cleaned up. With the GreenGrill coating, this becomes an easy job.

After barbecuing, you should first let the barbecue cool down. Extreme temperature changes can cause deformation of the cooking surface. Then you can clean the cooking surface with warm water and soapy water using a soft dishwashing brush or sponge. Be careful, do not use an abrasive sponge or steel wool.

Maintenance

Are you completely done cleaning your GreenGrill? Then, we recommend lightly rubbing the coating with some kitchen paper and a few drops of oil. The oil seals the surface from the outside air and moisture. To keep the supplied storage bag clean, it is best to put the cooking surface first in a plastic bag and then in the bag. The storage bag ensures that the GreenGrill coating is not damaged.
